Comic Suggestions for the female in your life

For those who follow my blog know that I'm a big fanboy and I have said that I can get anyone to truly enjoy comics if I know what they like and they are willing to give it a try .

I have introduced comics to several of my friends and family who have thank me for showing how great comics are.
One of the best things I've done is to introduces my sister and my girlfriend into comics and they both have become big fans of as well.

So I decided since in this month is my anniversary with my girlfriend, I should make a list of all the graphic novels and weekly comics that would be great to introduce to any ladies in your life to see if you can get them interested or to a least to understand the medium.

Runaways - When you were a kid did you ever think that your parents might be evil??
Brian K Vaughan & Adrian Alphona answer that with a wonderful story about a group of kids who after finding out that their parents are super-villains decide to fight back.

Spider-man loves Mary Jane -"you hit the Jackpot"
Sean McKeever & Takeshi Miyazawa takes you back to high school with Mary Jane Watson and her friends deal with teen drama, romance and some action.

Plain Janes + Janes in Love -People Loving Art In Neighborhoods. But can art attacks really save the madness that is high school?
Cecil Castellucci & Jim Rugg bring us 2 great books about a group of outcast who decide to make high school a much better place to be.

Y:The last man - How would you feel if you were the last man on Earth?
Brian K Vaughan & Pia Guerra takes us to a world where in a blink of a eye, Yorick brown and his Capuchin monkey are the only males on earth.

True story swear to god - The meeting at the bus stop that changed the world of two people. This is where it all started.
Tom Beland brings us a auto-biographical account of a once-in-a lifetime chance of meeting your true love and what happens afterward.

Blankets - How does it feels like to sleep next to someone for the first time.
Craig Thompson wrote and drew his memoir telling the story of his childhood in an Evangelical Christian family, his first love, and his early adulthood.

Spiderman:Blue, Daredevil:Yellow - Behind every great Hero, there's an even greater female.
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale gives us some great stories of what make each of our Heroes be the best, and the one common thread in all stories is that each one is trying to be the best for the special girl in their lives (Gwen Stacy and Karen Page).

And many more titles to chose (Mouse Guard, Bone, Scott Pilgrim, Strangers in Paradise, Fables, Echo, New york Four, Confessions of a blabbermouth, etc)
With this list, anyone can become a fan if they just give it a try.

Scott Pilgrim Casting

Back on July 2008 on this blog I wrote a review/recommendation for Scott Pilgrim vol.1 - Scott Pilgrim vs the world and to me it is still one of my favorite graphic novel of 2008, if not of all time.

For those who never read or it's been a while since you did, here's a recap -
Scott pilgrim is a 23 yrs old slacker that meets the girl of his dreams (literally) and finds out that in order to date her he has to battle her 7 evil exes.

Now director Edgar wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is bringing this book to a big screen and he is bringing a huge cast of young Hollywood talent.
I'm so excited for the movie that I decided to post the cast listing, just to show what an awesome movie this will be.
The cast is as follows;

Michael Cera - Scott Pilgrim

Mary Elizabeth Winstead - Ramona flowers

Chris Evans - Lucas Lee (Second Evil Ex)

Brandon Routh - Todd Ingram (Third Evil Ex)

Ellen Wong - Knives Chau

Mark Webber - Stephen Stills

Alison Pill - Kim Pine

Anna Kendrick -Stacey Pilgrim

Johnny Simmons - Young Neil

Brie Larson - Envy Adams

And Many More. . .

The movie is currently being filmed & doesn't have a release date, we are also awaiting the release of the 6th and final volume of Scott Pilgrim.

Jeff Smith's Bone Series Review

This review is about a wonderful series that I didn't get to read until recently and I'm glad that I finally did.
I picked up Jeff Smith's Bone in an attempt to further my sister's comic book reading and we ended up loving this series.
The color series just recently came to a conclusion, So I decided to have a review of the whole series now that I've read it all.

Now before going into the review, Let me give you a little background on the creator, Jeff Smith.
Jeff Smith is a cartoonist currently from Columbus, Ohio and has been drawing since he was ten years old, In 1991, he launched his company, Cartoon Books, in order to publish his comic book series Bone which ran for 55 issues from 1991 to 2004.
In 2005 Scholastic started re-releasing Bone into 9 volumes in full color which in January, we saw the release of the last volume, Bone Vol.9 Crown of Horns.

Bone is a fantasy story the revolve around the Bone family, especially the Bone cousins, Phoncible P. "Phoney" Bone the goofy bone, Smiley Bone the mischief one and our lead character Fone Bone.

The story starts with the Bone cousins being kicked out of Boneville and having to live out in the desert, after wondering around for a while they stumble upon a
a forest and a girl named Rose ant the story continues from there. I decided to be spoiler free for anyone who want to read the series.
The story continues with kings and princesses, rat creatures, dragons, and many more characters ,the best part of the story for me was the chemistry between Fone bone and Rose.
Jeff Smith takes his time establishing each character early on while still leaving space for surprises.

The books take a more serious and fantasy turn toward the latter book starting around book 5 but once you are there, your so committed to the story that it helps you to push forward.
the story ends with a nice conclusion and closes the series very nicely, I recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of fantasy stories of all ages.

Project:Bookshelf

For the past couple of months I started to notice that I was running out of space on my current bookshelf what with all the books I either bought or received for Christmas.

You also have to add to my collection my addiction to Marvel's Mighty Muggs, with all this I needed to find a solution to this situation fast.

In my place I have a wall that's between my bedroom and my roommate's bedroom where I once had a small 3-shelf bookshelf,
this is where I decided to start my project.

Now big thanks goes to my brother Tony for helping me come up with the idea and for telling me to built it.
This Is the process I took to built my bookshelf, first I had to come up with the idea, so I drew it up on google's sketchup

and after that, I started my project.

Now that it was built I had to decide on paint, I decided to paint it one color only because I would be a lot of work and I was lazy.

Now this is the completed work with all my collection.

you can see more of the shelf and close-up of my collection on my flickr page.
